Best Summer Activities for Your Pet Rabbit (Safe & Fun Ideas)

Summer is approaching, which means the best season for us buns is almost here. It’s not just hoomans who enjoy a proper sunbathing session – there’s nothing we love more than lying our buns on the warm ground while the sun tickles our fur. Not to mention, longer days mean more time for play!

As wonderful as summer is, it’s important to remember that the hot season also brings some challenges for furry friends. During the warmer months, heat protection is more important than ever. Luckily, there are plenty of safe and fun activities we can enjoy. Here’s a look at some summer enrichment ideas for bunnies.

Build a shade that’s practical (and fun)

While most of us buns are happiest living indoors, we do enjoy some supervised outdoor time now and then. If you’re letting your bunny explore outside, make sure the area is secure (for instance, a safe enclosure or playpen where we can’t escape or get into trouble).

It’s also important to ensure the space doesn’t have direct sunlight. Remember that sheds and wooden hutches can quickly heat up, so we should always have access to a shaded area.

Whenever your little friends are roaming through the garden, provide them with plenty of shrubs and bushes. This will ensure they have a place to hide under and cool down, plus it’s a great way to keep their mind busy!

Plan a bunny picnic

We bunnies – we love a good snack and an opportunity to wander around. When you combine both of these things, you get the recipe for the perfect day, which is exactly why a bunny picnic is such a great way to entertain us.

Sounds complicated? It doesn’t have to be. Simply pick your favorite blanket (ideally something that matches your bunny) and prepare a basket of delicious, rabbit-friendly treats, such as romaine lettuce, kale, spinach, fresh fruit, or fresh hay. Just remember not to overdo it – while we may look hungry (and we’re really good at giving those hungry eyes), our tummies are quite sensitive. So, a little goes a long way!

Create an indoor obstacle course

While outdoor time can be great, most of our great adventures happen indoors, especially on extra toasty days when it’s safest to stay cool.

One of the best ways to keep us stimulated both physically and mentally is to build a mini obstacle course using items you already have around the house, such as cardboard boxes (they’re great as tunnels), towels (we love to dig our tiny feet into them), and low stools (a great option for practicing our bunny hops).

Just make sure that anything you include in our obstacle course is bunny-safe and won’t harm us.

Let us indulge in food foraging

When it comes to summer enrichment ideas for us bunnies, it’s best to focus on activities we enjoy. As you may know, we’re big foodies – but we don’t just love eating, we also love finding our food! If you’re looking for ways to keep us busy, it can be as simple as hiding our snacks in a brown paper sack and tying it up, or placing some hay in a paper tube.

Offer us climbing toys

Another activity we love? Climbing, of course! Though there’s nothing more fun than jumping over our owners, we understand you can’t be sitting with us at all times (as much as we’d wish). So, to ensure we don’t get bored, it’s a good idea to place a wooden box, a rock, or any other sturdy object in our enclosure that we can hop on. Another option is to get a cat scratch tower or platform – you’d be surprised how much we love them!

Create a DIY digging box

We bunnies – we’re professional gardeners. We’ll gladly use our little paws to dig into the ground. But if you don’t want us helping you in the garden (a shame, really), you can create a digging box for indoors. To do this, simply find a plastic container that’s not too deep and fill it with sand, soil, or even shredded paper. Then place our favorite snacks or toys in it. This will encourage us to engage in our natural behavior.

Offer frozen bunny treats

For our little bums, it’s not always easy to cool off. However, exposure to heat can be dangerous. That’s why, on a hot summer day, you should take the time to prepare some homemade frozen fruit and herb treats.

Looking for a recipe? Chop a little bit of apples, berries, bananas, and basil. Add them to an ice cube tray, pour in water, and pop it in the freezer. Once ready, drop one ice cube into your bunny’s enclosure and watch them enjoy the deliciousness!

Just remember – treats should be offered occasionally and only as a tiny part of your bunny’s diet.

Final thoughts

A stimulated bunny is a thriving bunny. Studies show that enrichment can reduce negative behaviors by 50%. So, if you want your bunny to behave, it’s important to provide them with plenty of mental and physical stimulation. The good news? Entertaining us can be genuinely fun if you lean into what we actually need (and no, that’s not fancy equipment). Simply give us things to chew, dig, sniff, and explore, and we’ll be happy and healthy!

FAQ

1. How do I keep my pet rabbit cool in hot summer weather?

We may love lounging in the sun, but we’re not built for extreme heat. Make sure we always have shade, fresh water, and a cool place to relax.

2. Can pet rabbits safely spend time outside in the summer?

Yes, we can, but only with proper supervision. Make sure the area is secure and shaded. If it gets too hot (anything above ~25°C/77°F), it’s best to bring us back inside where it’s cooler.

3. How can I tell if my bunny is overheating?

If we start breathing fast, seem unusually tired, drool, or feel very warm (especially around our ears), it’s a sign we’re too hot. In that case, it’s important to cool us down gently and quickly.
